Jan-24 | A Mentee’s Guide to Goal Setting

Setting clear goals is essential for success in any area of your life. As a mentee, working with your mentor to establish well-defined goals will provide direction and focus for your mentorship journey. This guide will offer you a framework for effective goal setting and talking points to initiate a productive discussion with your mentor.

What are goals?

Goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives you set for yourself. They act as a roadmap, guiding your actions and helping you track progress towards your desired outcomes.

Step 1: Self-reflection

Before setting goals, take time for introspection. Reflect on your:

  • Values: What is important to you? What principles guide your decisions?
  • Strengths and weaknesses: What are you good at? What areas need improvement?
  • Passions and interests: What excites you? What brings you joy?
  • Current life situation: What are your responsibilities and commitments?
  • Long-term aspirations: What do you want to achieve in the future?

Step 2: Goal formulation

Once you have a clear understanding of yourself, begin formulating your goals. Remember to make them:

  • Specific: Avoid vague statements. Be clear about what you want to achieve.
  • Measurable: Define how you will track your progress.
  • Attainable: Set realistic goals that challenge you but are achievable within your given timeframe.
  • Relevant: Align your goals with your values, interests, and aspirations.
  • Time-bound: Set deadlines for yourself to create a sense of urgency and accountability.

Types of goals

Consider setting a variety of goals across different areas of your life:

  • Personal: Goals related to your physical and mental well-being, relationships, or personal growth.
  • Professional: Goals related to your career, education, or skill development.
  • Financial: Goals related to saving, investing, or achieving financial security.
